Idea for Kaufhof Düsseldorf

it's a proposal to add to the "Kaufhof Der Ideen" site.

English: Sustainability, Innovation & Science Museum

My proposal is to build a new, exciting city landmark for Dusseldorf that can both be a cultural center for citizens and a tourist draw: a Sustainability, Innovation & Science Museum. This would use the size and central location of the site to its full potential.

This museum could be a re-imagined science center focused on innovation and sustainable solutions for the future. It could offer interactive, immersive experiences to children, teenagers and adults, as well as showcase forward-looking exhibitions, feature local eco-friendly businesses, offer educational opportunities for schools and provide idea-sharing spaces for technology schools, clubs and universities.

As a parent living in Dusseldorf, I know that such a museum would make the city more family friendly. Currently there is nothing comparable: just the Aquazoo, which is a bit dated, not very interactive, not centrally located and always too full on weekends (pre-pandemic of course). I think this would also help make the city more attractive for tourists, especially on Sundays when there is not much to do.

Museum key attractions could be:

  • Exhibitions on sustainability and science (for example, how renewable energy works, regenerative agriculture, importance of biodiversity, sustainable innovation, genetic revolution, digitalization, robotics, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, electric vehicles, climate science…)
  • Experiential attractions to put the theory in practice and test & learn – these could even be prepared and managed by university students (like they do at the MIT Museum in Boston)
  • Special exhibitions sponsored by NRW science & technology companies (for example, Henkel or Bayer, but also smaller start-up companies)
  • Marketplace for local, sustainable products and foods
  • Rooftop garden with a focus on learning about agriculture
  • IMAX theater for documentaries or interactive shows
  • Seminar / event location to provide regular talks and events on sustainability and innovation. It could be used to invite experts/professors/innovators to the city to share their ideas and solutions
  • Restaurants with sustainable concepts, like using only local produce and featuring local farms
  • Educational events for schools, digital classes for seniors, innovation workshops for teenagers / young adults, sustainable living tutorials for adults…

It would also be a wonderful opportunity from an architectural perspective, to build an eco-friendly and innovative building with a lot of potential for creativity. You could probably find many star architects who would be interested in such an exciting project.

For inspiration, you can think of the Science Center NEMO in Amsterdam (designed by Renzo Piano, it attracts about 700,000 visitors per year) or the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The museum could offer free entrance for children living in Dusseldorf, to support the families living in the city.

Many of the other great ideas included in this website, like the "Umwelt ins Zentrum", could be incorporated in this concept, for a truly holistic experience that will support Dusseldorf families, schools, Universities and eco-friendly start-ups and businesses. Please consider this, such an opportunity does not come often.

Thank you.
